Facebook is about to get meme-tastic

If you’re a millennial or younger you might want to look away but for everyone else, you might be interested to know that Facebook is going to try and help you get down with the kids by rolling out a new feature which is being marketed as a one-stop shop for memes.

Now, you might be wondering what a meme is, well the dictionary definition (yes, there is one) says:

  1. an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.

2. an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.

Basically, that funny picture that your friend shared and then you shared, that is a meme. Memes, when used correctly, can gain great engagement, though you might want to gauge your audience before posting. But why has Facebook done this? Well, for some time now, Facebook has been desperately trying to appeal to the younger generations, it is these days most popular among those aged 40 plus and younger users have been abandoning the platform for others, like Twitter and Instagram. This move hopes to pull those youngsters back. So, if you’re a business that is looking to target younger customers or a broad range of customers, this could be good for you – if it works. We would of course recommend that memes be used sparingly, with great memes comes great responsibility after all. Stay tuned for a lesson in how to find and use the best memes.

How do you feel about this attempt to bring the younger generations around to Facebook? Do you think this new feature will help you?
